Supporting the Safety of WAPA Employees and Contractors in Our Community

Jan 24, 2025
U.S. VIRGIN ISLANDS (January 24, 2025) – The Virgin Islands Water and Power Authority (“WAPA” or the “Authority”) is dedicated to ensuring the safety of its employees, subcontractors, and the public while providing essential services. Recently, several of WAPA’s Meter Reading and Meter Service employees have faced threats from members of the community while performing their duties. Such actions are deeply concerning, and WAPA is taking all appropriate measures to ensure the safety and well-being of its staff as they continue to serve the community.

WAPA urges the community to recognize the importance of these essential workers and to support them as they carry out their vital responsibilities. The safety of our employees and contractors is of utmost importance, as they play a critical role in ensuring continuity of service to our customers.

To help foster a safe environment, WAPA reminds the public that Meter Reading and Meter Service employees:
  • Operate official WAPA vehicles with clearly marked license plates.
  • Wear WAPA-issued uniforms.
  • Announce their presence upon arrival at a residence.
  • Display official WAPA identification at all times.

In addition, technicians from the Davey Resource Group (DRG), a subcontractor for the ongoing Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Inventory project, may also visit customer residents and businesses. These technicians will be using tablets, GPS equipment, and other devices during the field inventory and can be identified by:
  • WAPA Contractor ID badges.
  • Safety vests.
  • A Letter of Authority (available upon request).

Meter reading and GIS activities take place seven days a week, between the hours of 7:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. across the territory.

We ask that community members work with us to ensure that WAPA employees and contractors can complete their assigned work without fear of harassment or threats.
