Cigna Honors WAPA with 2024 Gold Healthy Workforce Designation

Feb 21, 2025
U.S. VIRGIN ISLANDS (February 21, 2025) – The Virgin Islands Water and Power Authority (“WAPA” or the “Authority”) has been recognized with the 2024 Gold Level Healthy Workforce Designation from Cigna Healthcare, marking the third consecutive year the Authority has been honored for its commitment to employee well-being. WAPA first received the designation at the bronze level in 2022, progressed to gold in 2023, and earned this gold-level honor for the second consecutive year in 2024.

The Cigna Healthy Workforce Designation recognizes organizations for their commitment to employee health and vitality through comprehensive workplace well-being programs. Gold-level recipients demonstrate strong leadership engagement, robust wellness resources, supportive workplace policies, and a data-driven approach to enhancing employee health and productivity.

“At WAPA, we believe that a healthy workforce leads to a stronger community,” said WAPA CEO and Executive Director Karl Knight. This recognition highlights our approach to fostering a workplace where our team feels supported, valued, and equipped to serve our community effectively.”

“We’re proud to be recognized with Cigna’s Gold-Level Designation once again,” said Sabrina King-Leonce, Human Resources Director at the Virgin Islands Water and Power Authority.  “At the Authority, we remain dedicated to supporting the health and well-being of our employees, knowing that a strong, engaged workforce leads to better outcomes for both our organization and the community we serve. I want to extend my heartfelt gratitude to our top-tier Human Resources team and the entire wellness committee for their creativity, enthusiasm, and unwavering commitment to keeping employee health at the forefront. This achievement is a testament to their hard work and efforts.”

Cigna Healthcare believes that vitality is essential to individuals and serves as a catalyst for business and community growth. Research from the Evernorth Vitality Index confirms that individuals with higher vitality experience better mental and physical health, along with increased job satisfaction and performance. However, less than one in five U.S. adults report having high levels of vitality, underscoring the need for employers to take a comprehensive approach to workplace well-being.

“Higher vitality is linked to a more motivated, connected, and productive workforce,” said Kari Knight Stevens, Executive Vice President and Chief Human Resources Officer, The Cigna Group. “Employers that foster vitality will fuel a healthier workplace and drive business and economic growth. That’s why we’re proud to recognize employers for their efforts to prioritize multiple dimensions of wellness, build a culture of health, and boost employee engagement.”

Through a range of workplace wellness initiatives, including health screenings, mental health resources, fitness programs, and workplace accommodations, WAPA continues to invest in its employees' well-being, ensuring they have the support needed to thrive both professionally and personally.
